Smart-Pumps, the EU-funded research project aiming to revolutionise heat-pumps’ design and manufacturing,. officially kicked off with a two-day meeting hosted at the Hellenic Mediterranean University in Heraklion, Crete, on June 26-27, 2024.

The Consortium, which includes six partners from Greece, Denmark, Italy, and Spain, gathered to discuss the Objectives and the Expected Outcomes of Smart-Pumps and to establish the next steps for the coming months.

The meeting highlighted the project’s focal points: improving the efficiency and sustainability of heat pumps; integrating recycled materials in the heat pumps design and ensuring low environmental impact; enhancing production flexibility as well as standardising manufacturing processes.

The project team outlined the strategy needed to achieve these objectives by utilising advanced methodologies such as Design for Additive/Hybrid Manufacturing and Functional Grading to enhance the use of materials in heat pumps production. Partners also explored how embedded sensors could be integrated into the heat pumps to monitor performance and ensure optimal operation.

Key action points to guide the first phase of the project were agreed upon and results, scientific publications and more will be posted in the Resources section as Smart-Pumps moves forward.
