As the Smart-Pumps project reaches two thirds of its way, our technical foundations are solid and the primary research phases are yielding significant results. However, innovation is not just about data and reports: it is the result of the daily dedication of scientists and engineers across Europe.

Introducing “Behind the Innovation” — a series of dedicated features exploring the expertise, the challenges, and the people driving our project. Through this series, we will delve into the unique role of each partner within the consortium, highlighting how their specific skills fit into the larger puzzle of the European energy transition.

We’ll start in Spain, where AIMEN is leading the manufacturing of heat pump components by leveraging Hybrid Manufacturing, Functional Grading, and Metal Matrix Composites.
The series will then take us to Greece — home to three partners with very different but complementary roles: HMU is designing for real-world application with a focus on efficiency, ease of use, and performance in reduced spaces; CERTH is developing non-invasive sensors that monitor the refrigerant flow with an accuracy level of over 99%.; and AETHON is engineering the system’s “brain” through a distributed IoT setup and deterministic, scenario-based control.
Danfoss, from Denmark, then applies its industrial expertise to ensure the scalability and market-readiness of our innovative solutions.
The series ends in Italy, where Deep Blue integrates human factors into the technology and leads the strategic dissemination of the project’s impact.

Whether it is perfecting a laser-melted component in Spain or optimizing the data traffic for a control channel in Greece, every step is part of a collective story of problem-solving and technical excellence — and that is exactly what this series sets out to tell.
