How digital frameworks and smart logistics are bridging the gap between heat pump manufacturing and sustainable material recovery.

Redefining the value chain: circular mechanisms in practice

Within Smart-Pumps, AETHON’s role centres on developing the circular economy mechanisms that allow materials and components to circulate across the heat pump value chain rather than being lost as waste. They examine how components are produced, used, maintained, and eventually retired, designing the digital and operational pathways that enable their recovery and reintegration.

By analysing waste streams and understanding the complex interactions between manufacturers, installers, recyclers, and logistics hubs, AETHON is helping to build a circular system that is both technically robust and practically adoptable for industry partners.

Current progress: digitalising circular material procurement

At this stage of the project, AETHON’s work concentrates on extending the EFFICIOUS platform to support circular material procurement and recycling. The objective is to establish a secure digital environment where recycled feedstock, refurbished components, and recovered materials can be tracked, certified, and exchanged with full traceability.

This requires:

  • Defining digital identities: creating digital passports for raw materials and recovered components to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Integrating recovery workflows: standardising recycling and regeneration processes across different supply chain tiers.
  • Coordinating smart logistics: aligning transport and handling operations between production facilities and recovery nodes.

Through this structured approach, Smart-Pumps gains a functional circular logistics model that reduces reliance on virgin materials, lowers environmental impact, and strengthens the project’s contribution to EU sustainability targets.

Overcoming complexity: bridging industrial gaps

The primary challenge in this process is aligning diverse industrial actors around a unified circular framework. Heat pump manufacturing involves multiple stakeholders, each with distinct processes, data structures, and operational constraints.

Designing a system that accommodates these real-world conditions without oversimplifying them demands rigorous analysis and continuous validation. AETHON addresses this challenge through close collaboration with consortium partners, iterative workflow refinements, and a commitment to grounding every technical choice in real operational practices.

Long-term vision: embedding circularity into clean tech

Looking ahead, AETHON’s contribution will help Smart-Pumps leave a lasting mark on the sector. By embedding circularity into the digital and logistical foundations of heat pump manufacturing, the project helps establish a new industrial standard, one where recycled materials routinely enter production lines, logistics networks support continuous resource flows, and sustainability is an inherent design feature rather than an afterthought.

For AETHON Engineering, participating in Smart-Pumps is a key opportunity to demonstrate how intelligent material management can transform a critical energy technology, driving Europe’s transition towards cleaner, smarter, and more resilient systems.
